Chinese New Year in Malacca

In 2020 Chinese New Year falls in January which is rather quick because whilst everyone is getting used to going back to work again, there is a rush to complete the many usual things before the Chinese New Year. From performing a spring clean of the house as well as getting cookies and food ready for visitors, I will be heading down south to Malacca to meet up with my family.

As it is tradition to have the reunion dinner on the eve of the New Year, we made our way down south on Thursday and traffic was indeed smooth. On the way down we stopped over at the Freeport A’Famosa Outlet stores in search of some cheap deals only to be disappointed that there weren’t any Adidas outlets there as well as Ultraboosts for sale.

We checked into our usual hotel (DoubleTree Hilton because Munz has some membership privileges there) in Malacca only to be greeted by an amazing sunset over Malacca Raya, the commercial area near A’Famosa. Checking in and getting settled down would have been a simple affair but having a screaming toddler was a little bit of a challenge. Thankfully the hotel offered bribes in the form of a giant cookie to calm the little monkey down.

Dinner was something different, I have always wanted to try out Pak Putra’s naan and tandoori and for once I decided to take action and ordered it. Because the little monkey was already asleep, I had to get the food-to-go. So this is a pro-tip. Naan and tandoori chicken aren’t great to-go. Moisture in the packaging and bag spoils it all and I feel that it would have all been better if we could have consumed them at the restaurant. I would definitely return and try it out again.

Malacca has definitely changed a lot, from it being very commercialised to an overabundance of commercial properties. There lies plenty of empty commercial lots and malls remain half-empty (at best). Some are completely empty.

So before we head off for our reunion dinner later, I want to wish everyone a very Happy Chinese New Year. By the way, if you haven’t seen Hong Leong Bank’s CNY advert video, do give it a watch!

Wishing you all a very happy Chinese New year from the Leo’s!
