Introducing RedNinja.TV and got Mojo? Photography Camp

gotmojo Introducing RedNinja.TV and got Mojo? Photography Camp

I guess my blog has been reduced to about 1-2 posts a week and most of the time its just 1 post but that is because I have been quite busy at work, multiple projects and activities to run and also weekend shoots but now I am glad to introduce to everyone, RedNinja.tvIn late 2009, when the stars and planets aligned in perfect harmony, it was then that 5 young and enterprising individuals banded together to discuss a common idea that had been brewing in their minds. The rough and sketchy idea was to bring quality, fun training camps and workshops to Asia.

After all, why should all the quality programmes by held in the US or Australia?

As the idea was birthed over various meals (we are very much Asian-foodies at heart!), it was decided that the training would focus on three areas: creativity, technology and business. With that, we began brainstorming on a name and late one night, RedNinja.tv was born.

And by we, I mean Alex Lam, Grace Tan, Jenny Sun, Jon Low and me with Mun Tzin helping us in the background.

Our first event that we are organising is not one but two events, the got Mojo? Seminar (23rd April 2010) and the got Mojo? Camp (24th and 25th April 2010). The got Mojo? camp is a highly experiential and fun weekend away at Port Dickson. It is a 2-day retreat for intermediate, semi-professional and professional photographers. The camp combines two vital elements that every photographer must master: the ability to identify their style and also the secrets of marketing your business successfully. The anchor speaker is Wiki Lee who is a famous wedding photographer from Australia.

Here are some examples of Wiki’s work.

JoeMcnally’s Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop – Part 1

I spent my birthday which was on the 5th of February at Joe McNally’s workshop here in KL a couple of weeks back. This is of course thanks to Louis from Wedshooter as well as the Wedshooter team who made it all happen. The workshop was a hands-on as well as a full day course which grouped 15 photographers on a Friday in Shangri-La in KL to learn about lighting and get to know Joe a little better.

In case you do not know who Joe McNally is, Joe is the most amazing photographer I have met and you might have probably seen most of his work on the cover of the National Geographic magazine. He is also the author of two amazing books, “The Moment it Clicks” and the more recent “The Hot Shoe Diaries“.

When I got wind that Joe was coming to KL, I was quite excited but a little hesitant as well as I thought that the workshops were going to cost a bomb. Frankly, it was a big sum for me but it was an investment for me. The best part was that I managed to schedule the workshop on the same day as my birthday! (Joe had five 1-day workshops here spanning from the 1st of Feb till the 5th of Feb).

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 01 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1Here is Louis introducing himself as well as Wedshooter.TV before introducing the man of the day.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 02 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1Joe started off the session with some quick introduction about himself as well as his assistance, Drew Gurian. He then went on to get to know each of us and asked us what are our expectations for this workshop. This was good start I felt as I managed to see who the other participants were. There were of course familiar faces in the group as well.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 12 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1

Friends in the photography industry such as Ian, Shen, Edwin, Hafiz and Gabriel were also attendees of the workshop. Funnily, Joe mentioned that our group was the only all guy group. I can see the testosterone levels shooting up, I guess the mix and the environment was a lot more different compared to this workshop. Look at all the female participants there!

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 05 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1After the rounds of introduction, Joe shared with us some of his videos as well as showed some of his latest work which was absolutely incredible and amazing. What made me smile was that he also had a couple of photos in his portfolio which was shot using available light which was what I normally do. Joe then mentioned that he himself also continued to learn by attending workshops such as the recent one where he attended Jay Maisel’s workshop in NY.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 07 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1At every workshop which Joe teaches, he carries with him lots of gears. And when I mean lots, I really mean lots! Frankly I didn’t take the rest as there are way too many equipment about to capture it all. But what he had prepared for us included around 16 flashes for us to use, an array of Justin clamps and battery packs, Lastolite softboxes and many many more.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 08 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1I spy the Twin Towers in the LCD screen of Joe’s Nikon D3s

The workshop began with Joe showing us the various equipment that were about in the workshop and then teaching us on how to use them and what the effects of using these equipment would do to an image. After trying out several shots indoor using both a white and black background, we proceeded outdoors to learn more about light shaping tools there.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 09 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 10 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1We also had a journalist in our midst, Jan Shim, hailing from Brunei who was covering the workshop

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 13 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1Then we moved indoors for another shoot again. This time it was in a service corridor where Joe showed us how to use our surroundings to create an amazing shot. Of course Ian had to pose for the shot as he would normally do.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 14 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1Then we headed out again. Here we have Joe’s camera setup to tether on his MacBook Pro which was very helpful for us participants.

JoeMcNallyWorkshop blog 15 JoeMcnallys Hot Shoe Diaries Workshop Part 1We even had fantastic props to use as backdrops and for our models to pose with. I wish!

After an intense session of learning how to use various light shaping tools as well as understand various light placements, the group adjourned for lunch.

More photos from the workshop as well as our own personal shoots coming soon!

Charge Up Conference! and I am not there

Anyway a quick word here on my blog, I am trying very hard to stick to my new year’s resolutions (I said I will blog more often) hence I am quickly sliding in this post here about the Charge Up Conference.

CUC2010 poster2 Charge Up Conference! and I am not there

Technically, the conference has already started and I am rather sad that I can’t participate in it for today’s session as well as tomorrow’s session as I am currently stuck in Putrajaya for training at the moment. At the very earliest, I will make it there on Friday afternoon. This year’s Charge Up Conference is the largest one ever with the largest group of participants.

This time round it will be in KL, held at DUMC. Check out some of my blog posts from last year’s Charge Up which was held in Penang over here, here and here.

For the participants over there, see you all on Friday afternoon!

So what happened lately?

Just a short post this time round while I recuperate from a busy week as well as food poisoning after traveling to Penang last weekend and driving through 8 hours of traffic (together with everyone else travelling up North for the Raya holidays). At the end of the week, I took a day off to check out Jerry Ghionis’ seminar. This is what I learned, just on Friday.

There were more than 130 participants.

I think there is going to be a change in the industry. It all starts with us!

blog1 So what happened lately?

Of course, both Ian and Grace had to join him on stage as well!

 So what happened lately?

Had dinner with a bunch of photographers after the seminar which lasted almost for 12 hours.

I found out that when it comes to food, photographers are shy! There were 9 of us, 10 soup dumplings on the table and after dinner, there were 3 left because everyone was too shy to take the dumplings.

I found out that Park Royal serves Haagen Daaz ice cream in their lunch buffet!

Bought a number of products which were very useful in yesterday’s shoot.

I found out that I haven’t blogged much so I prepared some photos ready to be posted up.

I need more sleep, but am glad I managed to satisfy Ian’s cravings for “bak kut teh”. He really is like a pregnant women, always got cravings for certain type of food whenever he is up in KL.

Conducting a Basic Photography Workshop

 Conducting a Basic Photography Workshop

Yup, as the title says, I will be conducting a workshop this Saturday on basic photography at my company’s office in KLCC. I think it will be an exciting and interesting event so I definitely need to beef up my slides a bit more to ensure that I can help them visually see the effects when tinkering with their cameras.

The great thing about it was that I was totally overwhelmed with the response. I had initally told them that a small crowd of 30 participants would be perfect including a couple of mentors. So the email went out company wide and within a couple hours, all seats were taken up. I am totally surprised by the overwhelming response (there is even a waiting list) so to be extremely honest, I feel to pressure to need to ensure that the workshop is a huge success.

I started working on the slides on my flight to Los Angeles as well as when I was waiting for my flight. From what I can see now, there is a lot more for me to improve as well as making sure I put into practice what I learned from reading my Presentation Zen book.

Now I feel a little nervous but I definitely want to help everyone learn about the wonderful beauty of the world of photography. Wish me luck everyone!

No I am not MIA

Contrary to what Nick says, I do not just blog my usual Wednesday Clicks. Unfortunately it is currently the peak season of my life where I am just swamped with work from the office as well as thousands of photos that I need to post process and deliver to the client before the Chinese New Year. So time is of the essence for me and I will be busy post processing photos from thousands of feet above sea level. Well truthfully, I am just post processing them on my flight towards Kota Kinabalu to attend Louis’ workshop tomorrow.

This time I managed to poison munZ to attend the workshop as well with her brand new Nikon D40. I will be loaning her my flashes throughout the workshop as I have two flashes.

Right now as I am sitting here at the LCCT departure lounge, I am a little bit irritated that although they may have provided enough power points throughout the terminal, not all of them are working. Surprisingly the Wifi network here is very good and the internet speed is very fast as compared to the usual slow speeds I got at Starbucks today.

My flight is going to board soon, time to sign-off and conserve that much needed battery energy I need when I am on the plane.

I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

As I mentioned in one of my previous post, I attended Louis’Take Back Your Life” workshop last weekend and it was totally awesome. Why was it awesome, one might ask. Well my dear Watson, its because that I learned so much about certain aspects that it not only gives me more time now but it helps me to think in such a way to make more moolah!

0807 takebackyourlife 004 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

Again, I am not kidding when I said those things above. Its true, you can ask the rest of the participants who attended the course and all of them can vouch for me. But then as my title says, I have taken back my life. A very good example would have been this week. I was already pulling in 12-14 hour days at work leaving me hardly any time to rest but I still managed to post process almost 2000 photos.

0807 takebackyourlife 001 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

And what does it take to make a good workshop, good materials or perhaps even more paticipation from the class? Since it is also part of my job at work to give trainings and talks, I realise that in order to get a good feel of the group would be to encourage more group participation. And that was exactly what Louis did.

0807 takebackyourlife 003 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

Added bonusses to the workshop was a talk by Alex from Integricity Corporation which touched on areas such as web marketing and making ourselves known in the online world amidst the million of other photographers, people, business out there. I learned lots of good tips and after all of those SEO stuff that I have been reading up online suddenly just makes sense.

0807 takebackyourlife 006 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

The other parts of the workshop which was great was the networking and meeting up with other photographers who are so passionate about this field that they are willing to fly in all the way from Sabah, Sarawak and also Hong Kong, their passion just amazes me as well.

0807 takebackyourlife 011 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

One of the other lessons I learned was to never put your coffee next to your laptop because someone might just hit it over. Poor Clement had to do without his laptop on Saturday because he accidentally spilled coffee all over it but thanks to his super-duper-ultra-quick-reflexes that can actually put superman to shame, saved his laptop. Yup, he pulled the power out in time. icon smile I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

0807 takebackyourlife 016 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

As you can see from the image above, the class wasn’t that big but because of the size, we had more time to post our personal questions and learn from each other a lot. Each and every one of us had something to share and that was just so great! Yes, I love it when people share, whether it may be their skills or thoughts, it just shows a little bit more of that person.

0807 takebackyourlife 005 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

You know, they say that behind every successful photographer is a Mac. I have to agree with it since I also own one myself icon razz I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

Then again, how successful I am is another story lah. I like to say that I am still in the process of learning and finding more and more ways I can to improve.

0807 takebackyourlife 017 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

Another part of the workshop which got me really really excited was the part about printing. I have fallen in love with prints ever since I attended the Charge Up conference in April. It was just peachy that Epson had a Stylus Pro R3850 available for us to use and print our photos. So much so that I went around The Curve earlier just now looking about for an Epson printer only to find out that they had limited models available. Looks like I will just have to experiment with my older Canon i850 printer at home first before I venture into another printer.

0807 takebackyourlife 020 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

As you can see that I am not the only person who is excited about prints. Overall everyone had a great time at the workshop and I must confess that my expectations of this workshop was totally different.

0807 takebackyourlife 021 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

Of course I would like to also thank CLICK for their wonderful hospitality and warm friendship. They took every effort to make us feel comfortable by providing us with plenty of food, snacks and most importantly, coffee (which kept me sane and awake).

0807 takebackyourlife 010 I Took Back My Life, really, seriously!

And finally I would like to thank the other participants of this workshop, your presence there made all the difference. A big thanks to Olivia, Michele, Kah Yee, Chun Hoo, Martina, Sathia, Alex, Grace, Bernard, Clement and of course, Louis. You guys rock! (I wonder if that sounded lame…)
