Greetings from Bangladesh!

It’s currently day two now here at Bangladesh and although I really wanted to write a blog post whilst I was in the airport yesterday, the internet connection at LCCT was horrendous. Anyway its the same here in Bangladesh as well, I hardly get any internet connection so it will be brief posts and updates.

Anyhow, the experience here is a real eye opener! I have never seen so many mosquitoes before in my life. My first encounter with the swarm (yes, thats how many there were) was at the airport. I could literally feel them flying onto me and hitting me whilst I was walking about. Same goes for the place I was staying as well and my left hand alone had more than 10 bites. No worries, we bought (we meaning Andrew and I) a mosquito repellant as well as a diffuser to run whilst we are sleeping. The repellant was excellent, Mortein to the rescue! I sprayed the room earlier and I already see 13 dead mosquitoes lying on the floor.

So much for those bloodsuckers!

Anyhow, the shoot is gonna start soon so I better best prepare myself icon smile Greetings from Bangladesh!

Windows 7 and loving it!

tile lg yourpcsimplified Windows 7 and loving it!

To be completely honest, I have a desktop sitting at home which serves me more as a multimedia device. Its exactly almost 3 years old running on an old Core Duo processor at 2.13Ghz. Previously it has been running on Windows Vista Home Premium edition and I never had any issues with it because I hardly use the machine for any serious work. This is until Starcraft 2 came into mind and I installed the game and started playing it.

That was when all of the problems started to appear. The game was quite slow, at first I blamed it on my old PC specs and I haven’t had the cash to upgrade it. Well, I just can’t bring myself to spending so much cash on upgrading a perfectly working machine. Another problem I kept getting was that Vista kept crashing my Starcraft 2 and after trying to reinstall the game again, I just couldn’t do it! I blamed it on the game at first, because in order to install the game, I had to be connected to the internet which somehow my Vista’s protocol was preventing the game from detecting the internet.

Well after a long hard consideration, I went ahead and reformatted my PC, installed Windows 7 on it and am loving it. Starcraft 2 seems to be able to play much smoother now. To be honest, I actually installed XP on it first but the copy of XP I had was a little too old which didn’t have any of my hardware drivers which meant I couldn’t connect to the internet to download them. After a painful weekend of installing it, I am quite pleased with Windows 7. Its a pity that I only have the 32-bit version with me, otherwise I would have installed the 64-bit version and fully utilize the 4Gb of RAM I have installed.

At the moment I am still keeping this machine clean, only installed Google Chrome, Open Office, Alvira AntiVirus and VLC player. I guess those are the softwares I pretty much need at the moment.

Can’t wait to get a new replacement office laptop fitted out with Win 7. My current one is still running on XP.

WindowsExperience Windows 7 and loving it!

Not too bad for a 3 year old PC scoring a 5.4 on the Windows Experience Index.

How do I see myself using the iPad

safari hands 201001271 How do I see myself using the iPad

The iPad was announced by Apple a week ago and with every new product that Apple announces and produces, there will be a plethora of blog posts and newspaper columns which creates a lot of buzz in the industry. First one I read was when Scott Kelby wrote about the iPad being launched and where he would like to get one for himself and for his wife. This sparked quite a fair bit of debate in his comments section (yes that guy gets loads of comments in his blog! I wonder why no one writes any comments here on my blog icon razz How do I see myself using the iPad ). Take a slow read at the comments and you would find that there will always be 3 camps. One which is pro-apple, one that is anti-apple and one that is the neutral camp.

Of course, after the heated comment debate, Scott wrote a post to reply all of the questions that have been posted up in his comments section which was rather lengthy and also yet entertaining to read. Then this morning I was greeted with a post by another guy saying that why the iPad is not for him as well.

So being ever so curious, I went about asking questions to some of my colleagues and clients as well as some of my friends about what they thought about the iPad. Of course I got the usual cracks about it being named after a sanitary pad but after the jokes and laughs, most of them decided that they are not going to get it now or when it launches. A lot more of them would prefer to get it when the 2nd generation model is out. I guess this was one of the responses from previous experience when the iPhone was launched (the 1st model wasn’t available in Malaysia and only the 3G version was launched much later).

Anyway, I do see myself getting one but of course there are a lot of functionality that most Malaysians can’t get with iTunes such as the ability to purchase music, videos and movies online via the iTunes store and with the iBook store going to be limited to the US only, that would just mean that this product is gonna be a large iPod touch.

But I do see myself buying it in the sometime future depending on some of my assumptions below.

1) As a photographer

I can definitely see the usefulness of the iPad as a photographer. This means that when meeting potential clients, we can display our portfolio on a much larger screen as well as show them previously made slideshows which are definitely very useful. The iPad also means that we don’t have to carry a large laptop (I am getting tired of the weight of my 15″ MacbookPro) out for quick catch-ups and meetings.

2) As a consultant

I love the fact that iWorks is going to be available on the iPad as well as it’s ability to read MS Office documents and PDF files. Great to bring into meetings (aside from lugging around a laptop or if you work in an organization that requires you to work on a desktop) without the need to print out documents for reference. This equates to you saving the environment, well sort of, because you are not printing any unwanted documents.

I can also see it being used as I present presentations, that is if there is a way for the iPad to transmit via Wi-Fi to the project, that would be an even bigger advantage.

3) When I am travelling

No doubt that I constantly watch movies on my iPod video and when the battery does run out, I switch over to my iPhone (has not enough memory space!), whenever I travel. The life span of my iPod is about to reach it’s end as it has now been relegated to staying in my car, so the iPad would prove to be a good traveling companion. I can easily transfer all of the movies I already converted for my iPod video for the iPad via iTunes.

All in all, these decisions are just some of the factors for me deciding to get one but I guess the biggest factor of all would be the price of the iPad. Hopefully the conversion rate doesn’t kill us over here and perhaps be within the range where I can claim the iPad via tax.

Only time can tell.

A quirky Wednesday

I had a very interesting day yesterday, so interesting that I definitely needed to just release it here on my blog. The day started normal, after being away for two days to attend training, I had to attend to a pile of emails as well as follow up on my to-do list which I accidentally dated some actions to be done on Monday.

Gym was planned in the evening but it was also the same night where my colleagues would play badminton. So on an impulse, I went and joined them after work. Didn’t have my proper badminton shoes so I had to wear my running shoes and it was awful. It was so loose that my toes kept hitting the front and it caused me to have swollen toes at the moment. During the game, it got a little heated (boys being boys and our huge egos), until I decided to dive to save a shot only to have to miss the shuttle and slam right into the pole while tangling up in the mess. This ended me with having bruises to my ankle, thigh and my arm. Ouch. Lesson learnt, wear proper badminton shoes!

Anyway, I still needed to keep my gym appointment and off I went to the gym to meet up with the guys. Did some weights and Boon’s version of the ball of doom which is a very ab crunching exercise. Ok, no need to know what I do at the gym, you really don’t want to hear what a fat overweight guy does there icon razz A quirky Wednesday

After a good aching session, we all headed back only for me to find out that I got the locker combination wrong. Seems that if you have those locks with a combination, make sure they are locked when it is kept in your bag, else it might get resetted. So that was what happened to me and I had to get one of the staff to help me cut the lock with a huge ass lock cutter. Believe me, it was that huge!

2nd lessons learnt, never leave a combination lock unlocked in your bag.

It was a real quirky day for me. By the way, I sort of liked Fast & Furious 4.

Shooting as a Passion or Just to Make Money?

Every now and then I have been hit by ephipanies mainly in regards to photography and of course, more precisely, the whole area of wedding photography. As I sit back and sometime take stock of what I have gone through, I realised that it has only been a little over a year that I picked up my first DSLR and started in this world of shooting and capturing images, or perhaps one might say, painting with light.

My first initial thoughts at that time was that I wanted to shoot awesome and breath taking images such that I can garner praise from around but is that the underlying intent that I was seeking for? Was that the whole truth behind me shooting, trying to gain the acceptance of my peers?

Of course that kept hidden within my subconcious and I furthered my “hobby” by attending workshops, buying more equipment and volunteering my services in order to improve on my portfolio of photos. I guess the big snag now in the area of photography is the term “volunteering” or perhaps “free services”. This is in relation to when a photographer gives out free services in order to practice or perhaps they would like to build their portfolio.

Debates on this topic has been going on everywhere around the world and most professional photographers feel that hobbyists and freelancers who undercharge tend to spoil the market.

I shall leave some of my comments at a later part of this post.

Some excerpts from one of the articles,

Next time you’re in the local hardware store, ask the salesman to give you free tools and tell him in return you will tell all your friends you got your tools from his hardware store.

Or try it at the grocery store. I can see it now, standing at the check at line:

“That we be $102.85, sir.”

“You don’t know me but I will tell everyone I know to shop at Ralph’s if I can just get my groceries for free”.

“Sure Mr. Brown nobody knows about us yet, here’s your food and have a nice day!”

I am sure most professional photographer will think this way and yes, people undercharging will definitely spoil the market out there. With the proliferation of cheap DSLR’s, more and more people are starting to buy them and begin their photography career. The more there are hobbyists out there, the more they want to shoot and that is a good thing! Heck I started just like one of them.

Then comes another problem, well I can’t really say that they are problems but more and more professional photographers out there (especially the wedding photographers), are beginning to see more and more people entering the wedding market. Of course competition is always good for the consumers but is it really true in the case of wedding photographers?

Take this for example, Grant Corban is a famous wedding photographer and he wrote an article in a forum here. Here is part of what he wrote.

I meet a lot of people at weddings who are keen amatuers who may have just bought a DSLR and think a friends wedding is the ideal place to test out their skills. This is prompted because two weeks ago two fools nearly ruined a mutual friends wedding coverage, and when I saw their photos posted on flickr I nearly choked. These guys had, after being told by the couple to stay out of our way, jeopardised our coverage in order to not only shoot but to publish snap shots so bad that if I had shot them I would be selling my camera equipment immediately.

So being on both ends before, I do know that there are some photographers who take situations like this as a part of their job. I mean, you definitely can’t go up to one of the relatives to stop shooting or perhaps (God forbid) that you start scolding them and pushing them away.

Of course after a while it slowly becomes a norm and you tend to get used to situations like these, well, I am to be frank and I take it as another challenge.

A lot of times, questions do pop-up in my head. One of them is that I always wondered if I will ever cover the cost of the money spent on equipment and workshops. The problem is that I keep wanting more lenses but at the same time not caring about the ROI (return on invesment). Until now I have been controlling myself, refraining from buying excessively. That on the other hand has stemmed another thought within me.

Part of my other job is to constantly look out for potential areas of risks and then figure out how to overcome them. The habit of finding ways to overcome obstacles has indeed been mentally implanted in me thanks to my company’s training and all but this lead to me thinking on how to overcome my need for more camera equipment. So out of this scenario, I came up with some ideas such as charging for shoots and finding more paid jobs online.

Slowly this has led to me being in a loop where I shoot for money rather than passion. This really didn’t hit me until I read this awesome article, written by David Ziser.

It’s Friday and a quick check of the calendar reminds you of what you already knew – you have a big wedding on Saturday. How do you react to the calendar reminder – is it just another darn wedding, or is it news that fires you up with the photographic possibilities of the day. Many photographers I meet are pretty excited about being involved in wedding photography. But too many other photographers I have met over the years answer with a negative attitude, and that is just too bad. Too bad for them and too bad for the client who has hired someone who may not put their heart and soul into the job.

What makes a good wedding photographer, or better yet, what makes a complete wedding photographer? What do I mean by complete wedding photographer? I mean a photographer who is involved enthusiastically from the first consultation till final delivery of the product with his/her client. I mean a photographer that’s on top of their form both artistically and creatively. I mean a photographer who understands the craft of the profession as much as the art. I mean a photographer who brings their heartfelt passion to the profession, to the event and to the client – they love what they do.

This really spoke right straight to me and yes, sometimes I do admit that my attitude determines my altitude no matter where I may be or what I may do.

Now I feel that I have so much more to work on and I got so much more to learn. I can’t wait for my next shoot!

Guess where I was today?

I was at someplace really high up. Really really high, I will let these photos do the talking for me.

It was rather difficult to shoot through glass as there were some reflection.

Anyway it has been an exciting and tiring weekend. Time to get back to work again tomorrow and start working hard again!

There is an alien living in my keyboard

No, the alien is not CJ7 nor is it really an alien but rather 2,202,060 living organisms residing within the many keys of my trust old keyboard. I say it is old as I bought it since I was in uni which was way back in 2002. That means my keyboard is about 6 years old.

I took an online quiz about the “health status” of my keyboard and here are the results.
2,202,060How Many Germs Live On Your Keyboard?

Definitely not something that I was hoping for but it sort of hit me that I better start cleaning my keyboard real soon. The amount of effort I put into cleaning my PC components aren’t really a high on my priority list but after reading about this tragic incident, and watching this amazing series, things just happen.

Anyway here is a picture of my current keyboard.

dirtykeyboard There is an alien living in my keyboard

Of course there will be a close up shot as well.

nasty keyboard There is an alien living in my keyboard

Anyway I was just kidding about this being my keyboard. Mine is black and the key layout is completely different from what we usually get from Lowyat as mine has the UK layout version.

Notice that the “@” sign and the “” symbols are swapped? Yeah I get confused ALL the time.

Anyway, enough ranting. I need a good nights rest after a long day at work and cell group at church.

Temptation Comes Around Again

Apple recently released their new Operating System, Leopard, a new and spanking look with features which would definitely pour extremely ice water over Vista’s so called eye-candies. After using Vista for the past couple of months, it is clear that Leopard is the winner hands down. We can always rely on Apple to come up with something so cool and funky!

With all of that comes temptation, should I get a MacBook Pro or not? Of course I wouldn’t like to spend all that unnecessary cash as I would rather get a couple of lenses instead for my camera rather than waste the cash on another laptop. Perhaps I need to stay away from all that poison on the world wide web icon wink Temptation Comes Around Again

On the other hand, I got a call from munZ last night while I was out waiting for my LowePro Computrekker (I was buying it secondhand from a nice chap) when she told me that my picture appeared in the Star under the Metro section on page 23. It was a picture taken during the Ted Baker opening at the Pavillion and of course Vincent’s picture was there as well. Unfortunately the web version of that article only has 1 picture which is rather surprising as I would expect that they would put more photos on the web as it would be cheaper then.

This weekend will be another photography blitz starting on Friday where I will be covering my department’s community day for the whole entire afternoon till evening, the Terry Fox run on Sunday morning together with Lensa Malaysia and Sunday evening for the XYZ FCS Concert featuring Juwita Suwito. I definitely need my battery packs by then, hopefully it should have arrived today or tomorrow from Shashinki.

This means that I would definitely need to get plenty of sleep and rest before the weekend. There are other events (ASUS photography competition at The Curve) as well which at first sounded interesting but later thought that I needed my Saturday to be a rest day. At least this will allow me to catch up on some post processing which I have been putting back as well as catch up on my studying (see books below).

Well this definitely shows that I am a Photoshop noob hence the need for me to do a little self studying and learning the features and techniques especially in the area of post processing. Let the learning begin!

After a month, maybe I might be able to achieve this!

Migration in progress

I have officially started with the migration process of transferring my blog from my Blogspot account to the one hosted here at MarkLeo.net. First of all I need to move quite a fair bit of stuff over and to learn all about WordPress and how to configure it as well.

Still I hope that this transition will be a smooth one and I can finally get this site up and running. At the mean time I definitely need to find time updating my online portfolio with newer pictures as well as finalize the layout.  Not an easy thing to do as I have zero web design skills and I would totally be depending on my old HTML knowledge.
