Ushering in the New Year

32554393 Ushering in the New Year

As it is now the 3rd day of the new year, I can’t help but really look forward to whats to come this year. It may seem to be a busy year for me, but then again when I look at what is to come, I definitely need to take the time to start planning out what needs to be done and what I do hope to achieve.

Right now, these are some of the things that I plan to achieve and have already made plans for it.

  • Submit photos for international competitions (been putting this off for way too long already). I missed out a couple of competitions already but if I want to submit them in, I want to do it properly and not submit it in for the sake of submitting them
  • Travel to the US with Munz and check out Disneyland, Las Vegas and San Francisco
  • Apply and get Unifi installed for the apartment!
  • Get new lights for the apartment, some ceiling hanging down lights and floor lights as well.
  • Print out my own wedding photos and buy frames from Ikea to hang them around the apartment
  • Move my stuff (files and documents) including my computer from my parent’s place to my new apartment
  • Update my blog more often and complete the new design and layout for this blog (yes it is still in it’s experimental design stage)
  • Post up all the posts that have been in draft state since May last year! Yes, that is how much of a procastinator I have been icon sad Ushering in the New Year
  • Post more photos on my blog!
  • Learn how to shoot cars! Starting with my car then hopefully start experimenting with other cars.
  • Reach the Diamond league in Starcraft 2 for 1v1. Managed to reach the Diamond League for 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 already so I have one more final hurdle to overcome.
  • Save more money and invest it!
  • Consider upgrading the BBK kit, perhaps the Golf R kit
  • Consider getting the Golf R LED rear lamps
  • Consider getting the APR Stage 1 Remap
  • Drive through Sepang Circuit with my Golf TSI (of course with an instructor icon razz Ushering in the New Year )
  • Sell more iPad cases
  • Sell off my original Atlanta 16″ Rims
  • Lose some weight, I have been setting ridiculour targets for me previously so this year around, I shall be taking it easy and steadily as well.

I will be heading off to Bangladesh this coming Thursday for a week long wedding shoot there together with the Stories team. Can’t wait for that as this will be my 3rd overseas shoot.

And last but not least, Happy 2011 everyone! May this year be a very fulfilling year for you all.

Happy New Year and the launch of Stories.my!

First of all I would like to wish everyone out there a fantastic happy new year. 2009 went by in a blaze for me and I really do look forward to 2010 because I want to put 2009 behind me and look forward to a brighter and better future ahead. I blogged about my new year resolutions and starting later today, I will be tackling them one at a time. I foresee 2010 to be a tough year where I will be facing a lot of changes and challenges but I am very determined not to live like how I lived 2009 and slowly change and improve.

In my post about Weng Jou and Yvonne’s portrait shoot, I mentioned a little teaser at the end of the post. Well, its now the 1st of January 2010 and I would like to also announce the launch of Stories! Want to know what Stories is about?

I am just baffled because I actually scheduled a post to be posted on my blog on Christmas Day (knowing that I will be in church and spending time with the family) only to find out that it has been missing. Weird, huh?

Speaking of older posts, I always realised that I have been blogging about my New Year resolutions and I realised that I didn’t set any for 2009. I guess that after setting them in 2007 and 2008, it hasn’t really turned out that well. Let’s just say that I haven’t been able to get off my ass and start making a change in my life.

One of the funny things is that my friends always say that my weight is like a yo-yo. It goes down as fast as it quickly goes up. Definitely one area which I will be concentrating in my resolutions this year, maybe its because of a different motivation altogether this time. I will talk about that later.

I guess with most other people is that we all set too many resolutions. Worse of all, we try to tackle all of them all at a time. I for one, am guilty of spreading myself too thin by challenging myself to so many different habits to break that I lose my motivational momentum. Recently I read this blog post on how to stick to our new year’s resolution and it really was an eye opener!

Leo says that, (ironically he is a Leo as well icon smile The one with the missing post and NY Resolutions! )

New Year’s Resolutions usually fail because of a combination of some of these reasons:

  • We try to do too many resolutions at once, and that spreads our focus and energies too thin. It’s much less effective to do many habits at once (read more).
  • We only have a certain amount of enthusiasm and motivation, and it runs out because we try to do too much, too soon. We spend all that energy in the beginning and then run out of steam.
  • We try to do really tough habits right away, which means it’s difficult and we become overwhelmed or intimidated by the difficulty and quit.
  • We try to be “disciplined” and do very unpleasant habits, but our nature won’t allow that to last for long. If we really don’t want to do something, we won’t be able to force ourselves to do it for long.
  • Life gets in the way. Things come up unexpectedly that get in the way of us sticking with a habit.
  • Resolutions are often vague — I’m going to exercise! — but don’t contain a concrete action plan and don’t use proven habit techniques. That’s a recipe for failure.

Now from the above I can safely say that I met all of those which led me to find out that I have been missing all these time. From mentioning some of the reasons why we fail, Leo then went on to talk about the 6 changes we can do and how to start working on that.

The 6 Changes Method
So what are we to do? I’ve created the 6 Changes Method, along with a new site called 6Changes.com, to solve these problems:

  • We only focus on one habit change at a time, so our focus and energies aren’t spread thinly.
  • We implement the habit changes gradually, so we don’t run out of steam.
  • We start out really, really easily, so it isn’t intimidating.
  • We focus on enjoyable activities, so we don’t need “discipline”.
  • We have two months to do the habit change, so if something comes up, it’s but a small bump in the road. And because we’re publicly committed, we’re going to get back on track.
  • We have a very specific plan with actions built in, using proven habit change techniques.

If you stick with the method, you’ll do much better than you’ve done in the past with New Year’s Resolutions. You’ll focus on creating long-lasting habits rather than trying to reach a short-term goal that fails. You’ll maintain your enthusiasm for longer and not become overwhelmed by the difficulty of change. You’ll have habits that will change your life, and that’s no small feat.

The Method
So how does the 6 Changes method work?

It’s simple:

  1. Pick 6 habits for 2010.
  2. Pick 1 of the 6 habits to start with.
  3. Commit as publicly as possible to creating this new habit in 2 months.
  4. Break the habit into 8 baby steps, starting with a ridiculously easy step. Example: if you want to floss, the first step is just to get out a piece of floss at the same time each night.
  5. Choose a trigger for your habit – something already in your routine that will immediately precede the habit. Examples: eating breakfast, brushing your teeth, showering, waking up, arriving at the office, leaving the office, getting home in the evening.
  6. Do the 1st, really easy baby step for one week, right after the trigger. Post your progress publicly. (Read more.)
  7. Each week, move on to a slightly harder step. You’ll want to progress faster, but don’t. You’re building a new habit. Repeat this until you’ve done 8 weeks.

You now have a new habit! Commit to Habit No. 2 and repeat the process.

Pretty interesting if you asked me but at the same time, don’t we feel that most of the resolutions that we set ourselves are something that we don’t like doing hence it becomes something we don’t like and hence we need a resolution to get around it? But the 6 methods does come as a truth because for every habit we might want to achieve, there is definitely something fun out of it.

It is also interesting that Leo did mention about public accountability hence I do hope that the readers of my blog keep me accountable for my 6 habit changes! A comment or two would definitely be helpful in reminding me and checking up with me if I have been keeping up with my habits. I heard that if I do something consistent for at least 20 times then it will become a habit.

So here are my new year’s resolutions for 2010!

  1. Wake up earlier and start my day earlier. I usually wake up quite late and have to rush through the morning. So within the next two months I will set my alarms earlier, snooze at most once or twice and force myself up earlier so that I have more time to prepare and drive to work as well as reach the office earlier and get a better parking spot. The tough bit about this is measuring this so the easiest way I think I can set is to start waking up at 7am for work.
  2. Spend less and save more! With my wedding coming up, I definitely need to save up for plenty of stuff and for furniture as well for when I move in to the apartment above Tropicana City Mall. 8 baby steps to achieving this? I guess I can start by spending less on photography equipment (actually I told myself not to spend on any equipment at the moment as I have everything I need and lots of training DVDs to watch). Stop spending on unnecessary gadgets and utilizing what I currently have at the moment.
  3. Lose more weight and maintaining it! Ok, with my wedding coming up, I definitely have to lose weight and make sure that I can fit into a tux. How do I achieve this? Run more often at work, at least once a week and start playing badminton with my old badminton mates on Tuesday nights. Probably get poisoned by them but I definitely need new badminton shoes. Target weight to achieve is 85kg, currently my weight now is over 100kg so its going to be a long journey.
  4. Be more disciplined! Yup, this is one area I feel I am totally weak in. I have to be more disciplined in everything that I do, it really doesn’t help that I am kind of a slacker hence I need to be more disciplined, disciplined in my personal life, disciplined at work and disciplined in my relationship with God. I can’t really put a KPI to this yet, need to give this a little more thought.
  5. Read more! I have a mountain of books which I happily bought and haven’t even opened them yet. To achieve this, I am going to slowly start by reading the book at least 5-10 minutes a day and as the weeks progress by, I will slowly increase my reading time. To make things interesting, I will write a book review on a monthly basis on what I have read recently.
  6. Blog more! Frankly, blogging is one thing I have been sort of consistent about, meaning that after 3 years I am still blogging but not as frequent as I would like. I am the type of guy who likes to laze about after a days work and by that I am simply too lazy to blog. So with resolution number 4, I want to be more disciplined in blogging as well. I do admire those other bloggers out there who can blog consistently. In terms of my creative writing skills, hopefully by blogging more, I can improve on it as well.

Well here are my 6 habits or new years resolution for 2010 that I have set for myself. Do keep me accountable ok?

Happy New Year and Reflections of 2008

The year has come and gone, the next thing I know I am being ushered into the next year with plenty of uncertainties roaming about my head. Uncertainties in life and uncertainties in what I do. Just about a month ago I thought I knew exactly what I was going to do but evidently now that it is the first day of the new year, I don’t really know what am I supposed to do.

Should I continue in the cycle of what I call a daily routine or should I start rethinking, revisiting and reflecting on what I really want to do. Why I say that I enter 2009 with uncertainties is because I ended 2008 with loads of questions left unanswered.

Firstly, I don’t really know where I will be heading to after I leave my exisiting project. This is totally entirely up to me to find out as well as check up on the senior execs in my firm to see if there are positions available in other projects. The next uncertainty would be for me to then consider whether to choose a role because of availability (times are bad now and 2009 has been predicted to be worse) or to choose a role which would help me in my promotion readiness.

The other uncertainty is because of my job allocation, shooting weddings might become a problem because I might be moved to a project overseas or even just here. With that in mind, I am quite hessitant to take any jobs in the coming month of January but thank God that it is also the Chinese New Year period so there aren’t that many at the moment.

I guess when I look back at 2008, I feel that I have underachieved, I felt that I could have done more, done it better and done it more efficiently. Of course 2008 was a blast but when I look back at several areas of my life, I can’t help but feel that I have let people down, couldn’t achieve my targets and realised that I have strayed away for a very very long time. What went wrong?

As I continue the next couple of days to reflect upon 2008, I know I have to move forward and to achieve more, be better and buck up for 2009. What happened in 2008 will be a lesson for me and I will definitely want to make sure that if 2008 was good, 2009 will be legendary! Or so Barney Stinson might say.

Of course not everything turned out bad in 2008. There were several key important moments that have left a mark in my life such as shooting a very interesting wedding in Phuket in April 08, managed to shoot with Malaysia’s most awarded photographer, joined the WeddingStory team, completed a very important project for my client, had a blast playing in the company band at our company trip, and met up with friends from the past and helped built relationships.

2009 will be a great year, 2009 will be one that I hope to achieve more.

Here’s to a great and wonderful 2009!

Have an excellent and blessed new year!

Weekly Wednesday Clicks

This week’s Wednesday clicks would come a little earlier as I think I might be rushing through the day to complete quite a lot in a very short time. Anyway, there have been some very interesting sites that I managed to troll out from the world wide web so brace yourself and enjoy the links.

On a personal note, I got back from Penang on Monday and I was totally exhausted. I guess the 9 hour drive up on Saturday and the 5 hour drive down on Monday took a huge toll on me but the trip was fun and relaxing. I really didn’t know that prices of food in Penang has gone up, I ended up paying RM8 for “char koay teow” and worse of all, “tau sar pneah” was completely sold out. I got loads of photos to sort through, process and deliver so will be very busy over the next couple of weeks.

Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

xmas2008 web Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year

This time of the year, I pray that I don’t burn out rushing for deadlines and finish all of my post processing. Running out of space on my computer, just checked and there is only 2.16Gb left on my HDD which stores all my photos. Definitely need a HDD upgrade, 1TB hard disks are getting cheap nowadays!

Off to Penang tomorrow for some much needed R&R but will be bringing my laptop to do a little bit of post processing as well.

Blessed New Year!

I want to take this time to wish everyone a very blessed new year. Another year has passed and we can usher in a new one with much hope and something to look forward to. Well, for me, I have a lot to look forward to. But before I start looking forward, let’s take a step back and reflect on what happened in year 2007.

  1. Missed all of my last year’s resolutions icon razz Blessed New Year!
    • Losing weight = failed!
    • Run a 1/2 marathon = failed! Only achieved 10km runs icon razz Blessed New Year!
    • Properly save money = failed, didn’t achieve target!
    • Practice my guitar = failed, I sold my guitar to fund my new passion.
  2. Broke up
  3. Became broke by becoming in a huge debt
  4. Found God
  5. Lost God in the midst of flurry
  6. Halfway through SOL 1
  7. Got promoted at work
  8. Found new and old friends
  9. Found munZ
  10. Started a new hobby/passion
  11. Invested in my new hobby/passion and shot 3 weddings this year
  12. Joined Facebook – sounds sad isn’t it?
  13. Lost some sort of my passion at work and in church
  14. Found out that a lot of my friends are getting married

And the list goes on and on. 2007 was definitely a year where I can reflect on but should not dwell on but to look ahead. As I begin my next ritual of writing my 2008 resolution, perhaps there is something I can plan better as 2008 promises to be good year ahead, and as Ps. Daniel said during watchnight celebration, 2008 will be a year of multiplication.

  1. Multiply my relationships with God, family and friends
  2. Multiply my passion for God
  3. Multiply my passion for building and strengthening relationships
  4. Multiply my gifts and skills which God has given me
  5. Multiply my abilities and resilience at the workplace
  6. Multiply my wealth

Nothing comes ever so easily from God and as many people would say that a job won’t fall unto our laps but we have to take the effort to look for one believe that God will provide us with one. Therefore, in order to achieve all of that above, I have to put in the effort and believe God will be there for me.

  1. Spending more fixed time with God
  2. Spending more fixed time with family and friends
  3. Sharing more openly with friends
  4. Practicing hard with my camera until it becomes an extension of me
  5. Learning to save money as well as spend it wisely
  6. Be bold and have confidence in the skills and gifts which God has given us
  7. Find and continue to look for ways to invest money

And the list continues on and on. But until then, HAPPY NEW YEAR. My feet is killing me, just followed Zung around today of ThePhotoz.com for a wedding shoot. Real fun and definitely a very good learning experience for me.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Amidst all the rush and dash through the long weekend, it was definitely worth all the effort and hard work put into it. From running about doing a photoshoot for a website, to rushing for a wedding in Subang and planning a surprise party for munZ as well as shooting in church on Christmas morning, I can say that it was a terribly hectic 5 days.

Because of that, I totally forgot to wish everyone a very BLESSED CHRISTMAS!

Oh yeah, and don’t forget, Happy New Year! (in case I forget next week icon razz Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year )
