Charge Up Conference! and I am not there

Anyway a quick word here on my blog, I am trying very hard to stick to my new year’s resolutions (I said I will blog more often) hence I am quickly sliding in this post here about the Charge Up Conference.

CUC2010 poster2 Charge Up Conference! and I am not there

Technically, the conference has already started and I am rather sad that I can’t participate in it for today’s session as well as tomorrow’s session as I am currently stuck in Putrajaya for training at the moment. At the very earliest, I will make it there on Friday afternoon. This year’s Charge Up Conference is the largest one ever with the largest group of participants.

This time round it will be in KL, held at DUMC. Check out some of my blog posts from last year’s Charge Up which was held in Penang over here, here and here.

For the participants over there, see you all on Friday afternoon!

Mark’s meaning of Joy

The story behind this quick slideshow I made begins a couple weeks ago during the Charge Up Conference. I was one of the coaches during the workshop time for the photography stream and the delegates had to complete a project based on themes. The coaches decided to give the delegates themes based on human expression and the team I was overseeing chose the theme, Joy. What the delegates had to do was to shoot as a team, come out with a story and create a slideshow with the photos they took which depict joy.

How they want to depict “Joy” can be anyway they want. It could have been a story of a person who found joy or even things that bring us joy. The group then proceeded to head to New World in Penang (I am from KL by the way so I was being led around by the Penangites) where they thought might be a good place to take photos and get some interesting shots. So while the group was running about shooting, I decided to take some shots as well of the surroundings.

By the time the delegates had finished shooting, they were busy hustling and bustling through their photos as well as trying to pick the ones to be able to form a proper storyboard. Trust me, it is during these times you wouldn’t want to get into their way. Tension was really building up, it was getting late and everyone was trying to complete it before the showcase tomorrow (the showcase is where each team from the photography stream and video streams show their project work which they completed in just one day).

Anyway, noticing that they were getting tense and nervous as well as trying to overdo the other teams, I quickly put together the photos I shot and produced the slideshow below.

Well I managed to get some of their attention and hopefully, made them feel a little bit more relaxed after that. Thought I would like to share this with everyone as well icon smile Marks meaning of Joy

Last day of Charge Up Conference 2009

It’s the last day of Charge Up and after working through the night to compile everyone’s photos to be included in the DVD, I am just dead tired. Anyway the final screening is about to be shown soon and for Ps. Victor’s last PowerUp Session. I was really touched by all of the delegate’s work from both the videography and photography stream. You guys are absolutely awesome!

Here are the group shots that we took on Friday.

I took a couple shots of this angle with various exposures and layered them to get the background and foreground correctly exposed.

This next group shot was taken by Grace.

Traveling back to KL after the last PowerUp Session and I can’t wait for Ps. Victor’s last sermon. Awesome stuff!

p.s. Super tired from collecting and sorting through all the photos taken by loads of people during the conference, got back to my room at 4am.

Charge Up 2009 Day 1

Yes I am here now in Penang attending the Charge Up 2009 Conference and this time not as a participant but rather as one of the coaches for the Photography Stream. Every year Livewire Media organizes a conference for the AV folks and this year it is held at the Penang Christian Centre (PCC). There are 3 available streams for all conference delegates, video, audio and photography and all of these streams are taught by experts from the industry themselves.

Here is Choon Ean giving her opening speech about how she fractured her fibula while trying to take photos while paragliding. I won’t say what that gesture was icon wink Charge Up 2009 Day 1

Every day after the Power up sessions in the morning, we will all proceed to individual workshops. Here is Grace teaching the first workshop on exposure.

Ke Wynn was awesome and he is really down to earth. Each time to constantly reminds the participants that you don’t need great gear to take great photos. It takes great photographers to take great photos.

Of course during the course of the workshop, Ian decides to have some fun with Joseph’s funky stuff.

And of course, a quick candid of our wonderful bag seller, Jonathan. Jonathan has the most outstanding portfolio that I have seen I am still trying to get him to share with me his thoughts and thinking process behind his shoots.

Ok, I got to get back to class and begin to capture more photos of the participants.

Wednesday Clicks

Over the past week I had a huge scare when I tried updating this blog and I also gotten a new 1TB hard disk thanks to munZ. I installed it into my PC at home and only realised that I removed the wrong SATA cable and now one of my older hard disks is disconnected. Once the new hard disks are formatted, I will attempt to reconnect back the other SATA cable as well as try to tidy up the mess that is inside my PC.

Been looking at options to update my blog layout as well as a full redesign. Can’t seem to find the time to sit down and look through all of the codings. Might need to setup another test blog before moving over.

Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

I just had a fantastic day at the Charge Up Conference at Life College at Jalan Tandang. Why fantastic? Because I am learning more and more about photography. What made today even more fantastic is that I participated in my first “No chimping” contest. Basically “No Chimping” is a method where we shoot in manual mode and take photos with our Digital SLR without looking at the LCD monitor.

Yes that’s right, all you film camera junkies out there would probably give me that “now you know how it feels” look and yes, it was definitely challenging. What made it even more intense was that we were given about 2 hours to shoot only 36 shots and we had to select our best 3. It wasn’t easy at all but I tried to have a story behind my shots.

no chimping 01 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

In the shot above I wanted to depict a red stop sign from going in to the 4D Toto shop. I have to thank Luke for helping me to look out for traffic while I stood in the middle of the road trying to nail the shot. I needed a higher angle to get the larger sign.

no chimping 04 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

In the shot above I wanted to let the grey area depict that of an industrialized area or perhaps something that is urban and then show the bright contrasting colours of the flowers peeking through the railings.

no chimping 05 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

I saw this interesting sign whilst exploring PJ Old Town as I walked across the pedestrian crossing.

no chimping 06 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

I saw these flowers at the florist and took a quick snapshot. Really glad that although I got some weird stares from the shopkeeper, she didn’t chase us away.

no chimping 25 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

This is a shot of Julian outside the training room. The competition required us to take 36 shots and by the time I arrived back at Life College, I had only 20 shots! Quick shot of him using the hallway lighting to nail this shot and still get some catch light in his eyes.

no chimping 31 Day 1 at the Charge Up Conference 2008

The last photo was rather interesting as this was the door handle to the men’s toilet at Life College. Looks like someone was a real “Heroes” fan.

As I walk away from the 1st day of the Charge Up conference, I can’t help but remember about Ps. Sandra Chin’s sermon. What would we be without our equipment? We need to separate ourselves from our skills and realize that we are children of God.

The One with the Rat Race

Yup, two days have passed since I last updated my blog and although I would love to publish the photos I took over the weekend at the “From Ordinary to Extraordinary” workshop, I need to find the time to even select them. I took quite a number of photos that day and I just need to sort through them. My priority right now would be to send out the group shots to the participants and also to the models who played an important part.

At the moment, still no pictures up yet because I am at yet another workshop. Nope, it is not a photography related workshop but more towards work related. The bright side is that I don’t have to travel to Cyberjaya for the next couple of days (the workshop is at IBM in Bandar Utama) but the down side is that I lose out on my travel claims. The sacrifices I make in the pursuit of knowledge icon razz The One with the Rat Race

Anyhow, today was an interesting day as I learned a lot about DB2 and how it interacts with SAP. Keat Seong played an important part to me today as I had little experience as a Basis Engineer and that was where he came in. Of course not without his antics of trying to copy over the instance to another client. Because I was at training the entire day, I had little time to check my work email so I gave my weekly badminton session a skip and concentrate on my work instead.

See, you can’t really blame me for not posting up any photos here.

Anyway, the Charge Up! 2008 conference is coming soon, next week to be precise. Really looking forward to it and I need to practice shooting this weekend as well or else I might forget what I learned. Baby steps is what I need to take.

Until the next post, unless extra work suddenly falls on my lap.

Charge Up! Conference – Its coming, again!

Last year, I started my photography journey when I attended my very first photography workshop at Jalan Tandang. Prior to that, I had just recently purchased my Nikon D40 and was playing with the camera for about a month before. Little did I know that attending Charge Up 2007 would leave an impact so great until now.

One year down the road and it’s here again, Charge Up 2008!  Of course I will be taking up the photography workshop as usual and I can’t wait to learn more from Louis Pang again. I have been to many photography workshops and I loved his teachings and lessons. Given that it was extremely new to me the last time (I couldn’t understand what he meant when he said SB-800 or 17-35mm f/2.8). All I knew was that he takes amazing photos and it was then that I realised I wanted more from my camera.

One year ago during the Charge Up conference, I took these 5 shots to be submitted.

This year, if there is an opportunity again for this, I will definitely benchmark myself, not to beat last year’s photos but to be more on the creative side. A pro wedding photog did mention to me once that I was too technical and not artistic enough. I find that very true and I blame my interest for technical stuff and my engineering background. Actually, I do know a lot of engineers who are extremely artistic as well. This year I hope to awaken my artistic side of things.

So what are you waiting for? Head over here and sign up now!
