Can I celebrate also? Please?

Today mark’s the UN’s celebration of the World Human Rights day. In effect, many people today lack the very knowledge of the rights that one might hold, whether it may be their own personal rights as a consumer, a voter or just as a normal citizen.  But truth be hold, amidst many of what some might consider a “drivel” of misguided information put forward to unsuspecting people, many of them are clouded by a mist of twisting and spinning stories to lure them further away from the truth.

Quote from the UN’s website:

The promotion and protection of human rights has been a major preoccupation for the United Nations since 1945, when the Organization’s founding nations resolved that the horrors of The Second World War should never be allowed to recur.

Respect for human rights and human dignity “is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”, the General Assembly declared three years later in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, all States and interested organizations were invited by the General Assembly to observe 10 December as Human Rights Day (resolution 423(V)).

The Day marks the anniversary of the Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Over the years, a whole network of human rights instruments and mechanisms has been developed to ensure the primacy of human rights and to confront human rights violations wherever they occur.

Respect for human rights and dignity is of the essence but unfortunately it isn’t practiced so much around here with statements such as “balik tongsan” coming from the very people charged to helping us preserve our rights.

Too much has happened over the weekend and too much has been reported on the media. Of course everyone wants to know what is going on and with the Internet being so easily available nowadays, who ever believes what they read in the newspapers. How much so can we trust these so called “credible” sources of the media?

I rather read my news online because I believe that the level of trust I have for these spin doctors have reached an all time low and as someone once told me that it only takes a minute to destroy a lifetime built reputation.

Anyhow, let us not stray from the fact that today is the World Human Rights day so let’s celebrate the fact that we are still in a democratic state but yet mourn for the things that are happening around us. Perhaps these photos might tell a better story indeed.

Isn’t YouTube wonderful?

I would never have been able to view all of this with my busy schedule or perhaps I just didn’t have the time to actually sit down in front of a tele and then watch what is going on. Then again most of the time it would have to be CNN instead of Al-Jazeera. But now, this piece of news gave me a very insightful view of what happened last weekend.

After watching this video, my cheeks definitely turned red from the embarrassment because someone has been caught red handed on live television. Suddenly vision 2020 seems to be not too realistic to me.

And also, apparently, there seem to be some sort of going on in our Dewan Rakyat as usual. No holds are barred there and everyone loves to scream at each other without giving up and without trying to keep a cool head.

I think we have a serious problem, there are so called “pondans” around. Now who is the one who should be declared a “pondan”? The people who dared to make a difference or the person who sits back and criticize every other thing someone elses does.

What seems to be the problem here?

Working in the IT line and trying to streamline processes so that things are efficient and works well definitely makes me wonder how companies like Streamyx survive! After reading many posts about bloggers not being able to access their Gmail accounts, I thought I would try to check if there was any press release statement from Streamyx about their international link.

Of course there was none. The first thing I did was key in the URL, http://www.streamyx.com and was greeted by a very unprofessional looking website which I can swear, college kids could design nicer looking websites (and it works better!). You can see that the images used on the page (especially the *.GIF type) were badly compressed as if they used MS Paint to do compression.

Next would be figuring out how to navigate through to their press releases or perhaps announcements. Like a poorly maintained or planned out website, navigating through this webpage is completely crappy. I clicked on “Corporate Information” because it highlighted “Latest News” when my mouse went over the image and was again greeted by the same style and layout of the page with hardly any information on it.

Simple coding flaws show that the button images at the top of the page didn’t seem to have any spacing in between and the fonts on the buttons were already touching the borders. Very lazy work to be frank but the good side of this is that the same problem appears on all their pages, “Customer Service” and “Online Services“.

Going back to the Corporate Information page, I couldn’t find any button or tab which states latest news (inconsistent message portrayed on front page) but there was a “Newsroom” section which I clicked. No news about failing connections to the US or other countries. Seems that everything is peachy keen for them at the moment.

Then I spied on a news headline which states,

TM LAUNCHES ITS NEW SECURE ONLINE STORAGE AND BACKUP SERVICE FOR HOME AND BUSINESS

Now this is pretty interesting as I always thought that backup services would be a handy thing in mind and since my PC is running most of the time, a constant upload of my backups would be pretty good to have. So I read the news and to be given with two links to decide upon.

To quote the news article:

For more information on e-Storage, visit http://storage.netmyne.com. For more information on TM’s Internet products and services, log on to www.tm.net.my.

I clicked on the first link only to be greeted by a login page which didn’t provide me any information nor did it have any links which might bring me to a site to advertise their services. Mind you,  in this day and age, if you don’t put any details up to entice your customers, it is as if they want to say they have the service but don’t want you to sign up.

I then proceed to click on the 2nd link only to be brought back to the main page of TM’s website with no apparent news about the eStorage crap they were announcing.  After clicking around the website for another 20 minutes only to not find any sort of visible link or advert in the website, I proceeded to write this post in my blog.

Why? Because I feel that such a huge corporation like TM would definitely need to buck up on their service levels and think a little further than publish 10 year old “homemade” coroporate webpages when a 12 year old kid can actually publish a successful website such as this.

This just makes me sick and dissapointed.
