Of Internet Connections and 3G Speeds

Yes, this is just another rant but surprisingly when I typed in “Streamyx Sucks” in Google, I was rather surprised by the number of returns I got. Looks like I am not the only one complaining about their slow Streamyx speeds because I just can’t access certain websites without constantly refreshing the site. praying that it will somehow work. Check out this site on what may be the cause of the slow speeds, but I am very very inclined to sign up with Packet One at the moment.

On another note, I recently subscribed to Maxis’ 3G service and I am still rather dissapointed with it’s slow download speeds. It is so slow that I constantly have to find a spot where there is a decent signal and most of the time I get bad connection speeds such as being downgraded to the EDGE line or the GPRS line. This is rather disturbing to me.

Movie Review: IP Man

Ok, the movie is not pronounced as “ai-pee man” but rather “eep-mun”. It is a dude’s name and not a movie about IT geeks gone wild or crudely put it as the next geek flick. On the contrary, this movie reminds me of the good old kung-fu flicks that I watched as a boy and this movie does not disappoint.

Ip Man is adapted from the life story of Ip Man, the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu (master) of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee. This movie will be the first important record of the master’s life. Ip’s persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. Ip Man is a concept, a spirit, a way of thinking – and it represent a new peak in Hong Kong’s wushu movies.

Based on a true story and coupled with realistic fight scenes, like I said earlier, this movie does not dissapoint. Everything about this movie was excellent and I figured that I would enjoy this show.

ipman1 Movie Review: IP Man

The movie brings us back to China just before the Sino-Japanese war, a city called Fushan which was famed to house many martial arts practitioners. With martial arts being popular and people wanting to show that their own style of martial arts is popular, the scene portrays a city where martial arts dojos are the cash cows of the city’s economical height.

ipman2 Movie Review: IP Man

Ip Man was not one of those who set up a training schools and teaching disciples but his reputation of a skilled martial artist precedes him and his humility reminded me of how Jet-Li portrayed “Wong Fei Hong” in the “Once Upon a Time in China” series.

ipman3 Movie Review: IP Man

The supporting casts of Simon Yam, Fan Siu-Wong and Lynn Hung added the much needed sense of drama, romance and friendship which makes this movie complete. If you thought that “Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon” was a real kungfu flick, you are sadly mistaken. This is as real as it gets, there are not fancy flying about waving your swords through the air. This is real down to earth martial arts at its best.

I give it a 9/10 rating. If you haven’t watched it, what are you waiting for, catch the next available show!

How Apple keeps us wanting more!

Another 6 months have passed since I’ve gotten my MacBook Pro and now Apple is at it again, releasing a whole new line of MacBook Pros and MacBooks. This time, there were some big changes for the MacBook line. First of all, Apple has shed their desire for white plastic electronic items in every household, only to replace them with a greener and slicker looking aluminium finish.

The new MacBook shown above

Several changes can easily be spotted starting with the black bordered LCD screens and wait a minute, the new MacBook looks like the younger sibbling of the MacBook Pro.

mbp How Apple keeps us wanting more!

I bet you can’t tell the difference between the two photos here!

In previous designs, the MacBook was distinguished as a fashion icon whilst the MacBook pro has always been designed for a classy and yet professional look. While that still remains the fact, the new fashion statement in notebooks these days are simplistic design with a hint of minimalistic touch and yet boasting enough features to blow the average consumer’s mind away.

New improvements include having the DVD slot moved from the front to the side in order to cater for it’s new battery design and easy removability as well as upgrade options to include a SSD drive. Another new feature which I think is extremely useful is the battery indicator.

Another new item which caught my eye is the new 24″ Apple Cinema display. Of course designed in theme with the new notebooks, the ACD is sporting a black border as well with the theme that it was designed with MacBooks in mind.

24inch How Apple keeps us wanting more!

The advert shows it all!

Judging from the size, this is something I am really interested in but of course I shall wait for a full and comprehensive review on it about it’s colour and image processing performance.

With all of these new radical changes, Apple continues to be the market leader (IMHO) in gadget designs which are known to be iconic. From the 1st generation iPod to the early days of the Macbook, Apple continues to impress me. The only downside was that rumours did say that Apple might release a sub $899 notebook but the only news was that the older Macbook stock would be sold off at $999 instead. If Apple did manage to release a sub-$899 Macbook, I can easily see Apple grabbing larger pieces of the notebook market share.

More details on the MacBook and MacBook Pro can be found here.

What if your father did this?

Okay, I am a high school student in my final year. My dad, used to be a principal of the school I am studying in. As a young and ambitious individual, I have decided to run for class president. Running against me is actually the son of the current high school principal. Some may say that the other candidate has the favour of his father (current headmaster), but me being “kiasu”, I wanted to run and win.

Against many adversities, I tried to overcome “sabotage” and “espionage” attempts against me by getting other students not to talk to me or even meet up with me. Now, tired and exhausted, morale is at an all time low and any sort of encouragement would be a real benefit to me who needs that all time emotional and mental boost. Of all things one would expect of a father would be the support but alas to my own shock and amazement, that wasn’t the case.

Instead of receiving morale support, I find out that my dad went on ahead and published online that he thinks the other candidate (whose father is the current principal) would win, hands down, the class president seat and that the other candidate would arise all adversities by using various tactics. Nothing was mentioned about me except that I was also contesting the seat.

Anyway the story above isn’t about me nor do I have anything against my dad but what really shocked me was this posting here by a very similar situation.

Although my son will be contesting I have no doubt Khairi will win hands down.

Ouch, the truth does hurt, doesn’t it?

Headlines of CNN

Amidst the financial crisis some parts of the world is facing as well as dropping fuel prices (currently at USD$96), there is always time and space on CNN to highlight our country. Previously it has never been in any sort of good light that we are highlighted, especially if we hoped that news like this might attract more foreign investors.

Anyway, here is a snippet of the article from CNN.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s opposition leader demanded Thursday an emergency Parliament session for a no confidence vote in the government, insisting he has secured enough defections from the ruling coalition to topple it.

Of course this talks about what has been going on around our country and what are the current headlines screaming. The Star is back to their cutdown web page to reduce bandwidth whilst Malaysiakini is screaming the headlines that “Anwar seeks emergency House session“.

News Strait Times on the other hand is highlighting on another matter, “SAPP senior vice-president and youth chief resign” whilst MySinChew is saying that Anwar demands a “Special” session of Parliament.

Our ex-prime minister, Dr. Mahathir, has this to say about the ongoing financial crisis. Whilst many people are wondering on why a blogger was detained under the sedition act. Apparently some said that he was charged because he asked that the national flag be flown upside down and this has caused much grief to certain parties.

Wikipedia states that based on International flag terminology, flying a flag upside down means to show that a country is in distress. With so much going on, this country is changing ever so rapidly. I guess change is inevitable, whether it may be that the economy will face another crisis on a global scale or maybe there might be some sort of a life line in our current state of affairs.

I had an interesting conversation today with one of my colleagues over lunch and it was about the failing financial crisis. Out of all of these, somewhere out there, in the midst of a whole economic downturn, there is someone out there who is actually on the benefacting side. Who knows, maybe until when the shroud has been cleared, only will we know what was the real cause or who might be the real cause.

Is the 16th September that important?

Many people have been harping on the date and finally, the 16th of September has arrived. What does it mean to me personally? Frankly, I couldn’t care less about the date nor can I really care about the significance of harping about the date. To me, it is in the minds of the people, to me, today marks a day where there is a group of people who are trying to change for the better.

News websites have been cut down to plain versions without the multimedia components in order to meet bandwidth expectations. So far, the two that I have seen would be Malaysiakini and TheStar. So far, claims have been that the numbers are there whilst mainstream news says that it is just a lie. Who knows what the future holds for us but one thing for sure, the ball is definitely in motion.

Here are what some bloggers have to say as well at Rocky’s Bru and Jeff Ooi on recent events.

Other updates would be that RPK and Theresa Kok are still held under ISA while our law minister, Zaid Ibrahim has resigned over the use of the ISA.

With so many events happening around us, I just wonder what would really happen. It is a public holiday here in Selangor tomorrow but I will still be working as my office is in KL. Should I travel to KL tomorrow on the LRT or should I try alternative methods instead?

Anyway, tomorrow will be a new day and I will be monitoring the situation on news website tonight!

RPK, author of Malaysia-Today, arrested under ISA

(Update 4)

If you have the chance, head over to MIS’s blog on his thoughts in regards to RPK’s arrest.

Raja Petra Kamaruddin has been arrested under ISA. As the author of the popular Malaysia-Today news portal, RPK has always been the centre of the limelight in many of his interesting articles posted on his news site. The arrest came as a sudden thing to me especially after reading that the MCMC has been ordered to remove all blocks from the website. Reported in by RPK’s wife that he was detained a little over an hour ago.

Personally, I am rather shocked and saddened that such an action had been taken.

Who are we?

SexyJudge has this to say about who we are. Though the name of the blog definitely doesn’t add enough credibility to the writer (maybe it’s because I have something against corny names or perhaps of our recent judicial problems, who knows?), I couldn’t agree more about the article.

Recently, I have decided to subscribe to a very interesting RSS feed, one based on the thoughts of our previous Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir, on his blog over at Che-Det. I liked one of his recent articles here and it does touch home some very interesting points. Nevertheless with headlines screaming that he is on the verge of returning to UMNO, perhaps this article was targetted for his return.

A Really Funny Joke – No Room At The Inn

I read this joke today and it really made my day icon biggrin A Really Funny Joke No Room At The Inn

NO ROOM AT THE INN

A man needs a room for the night. He stops at an inn and asks for lodgings. The innkeeper says that he doesn’t have any rooms available but there is one big bed in a room that he can share with another man but he must warn him that the man snores so bad that no one can stand it.

The traveler says that would be fine. Next morning he comes down all smiles and tells the innkeeper that he had a great nights sleep.

The innkeeper was shocked and asked the man how he was able to sleep with all that noise.

The man said, “Simple, when I got in the room I leaned over and kissed the man on the cheek and said ‘have a good night, beautiful’. He stayed awake all night watching me.”

I couldn’t stop laughing….

Malaysia-Today.net hacked??

Update:

According to the News Straight Times, Malaysia-Today.net should be back up and running but I still can’t seem to access the site. I guess I am fighting with the millions of other people trying to gain access to the website.

As usual I would try to read my daily dosage of news online and one of the many news sites that I visit was unavailable. I guess the reason why it was unavailable was because the bookmark which I saved on my browser linked straight to the index.shtml file. So I thought, why not just try with the main address at http://www.malaysia-today.net/ and was shocked to find this instead of the usual news site.

malaysia today hacked Malaysia Today.net hacked??

I guess the admin team over there must be working hard trying to restore control to the website. Its a pity that this should happen during the time when everyone is awaiting for some piece of news. I wish the admin team all the best in trying to get the site up and running as usual as well as get it properly secured.

As contreversial the site may be, it is definitely a target for many.
